NGD Publications

Recent publications from our first deployments, where prospective WGS detected transmission and enabled outbreak to be prevented.

February 2023

Machine-Learning Model for Prediction of Cefepime Susceptibility in Escherichia coli from Whole-Genome Sequencing Data - Humphries et. al. February 2023, Journal of Clinical Microbiology

Blind validation of NGD's WGS-base machine learning model determining resistance to cefepime in E. coli.  At 97% accuracy, the model's results were found to be more accurate than that of the standard of care.  The paper reports among the most accurate WGS-based models for the determination of resistance in Gram negative bacteria.

February 2020

Evaluation of a fully automated bioinformatics tool to predict antibiotic resistance from MRSA genomesKumar et. al. February 2020, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy

A validation of the NGD susceptibility prediction system, against 798 distinct strains, versus VITEK2.  All discords, initially approximately 3.5%, were retested, with most reversing to accord with the sequence-based prediction.  Finds validated accuracy of 99.7% for the NGD susceptibility diagnostic, establishing that sequence is the new standard for the determination of S. aureus susceptibility.

November 2019

Pilot Evaluation of a Fully Automated Bioinformatics System for Analysis of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Genomes and Detection of OutbreaksBrown et. al. November 2019, Journal of Clinical Microbiology

The first use of prospective, consecutive WGS to catch transmission and prevent outbreak.  Documents the first case where transmission in a diabetic foot clinic, mediated by a caregiver, was discovered by prospective WGS, enabling prompt and effective intervention.
